Manal Awad is the co-founder of Palestinian TV satire Watan a Watar which addresses taboo topics and was banned in its third season by the Palestinian General Prosecutor. Manal and her colleagues contested the ban and subsequently obtained a decision by the High Court that the ban was a violation of the right to freedom of expression. Manal is also the founder and director of Hayat Theatre, which has established partnerships with civil society organisations and community based organisations which work in the field of social justice and human rights. Hayat’s mobile theatre has gone out into Palestinian towns and countryside promoting free and fair elections, encouraging women and youth to take part in the democratic process and raising awareness about issues such as nepotism, corruption and bribery.
